The fall of the blind

‘The Parable of the Blind’ is a painting by Pieter Bruegel. It is based on a story from the Bible in which Jesus tells his Apostles that the scribes are like blind leading other blind and they will all end up in the gutter.

Bruegel displays that ending. A group of blind tumbling down the abyss one after the other. The details are painted so strikingly that eye doctors are able to distinguish five different eye diseases in the painting.

The German novelist Gert Hofmann has created a beautiful tale on the genesis of the painting, from the perspective of the blind. They are struck with wonder that someone wants to immortalise them. Why would anyone want to paint them? It is bad enough that they exist; surely some punishment by God or man for a sinful and bad life.

The description of their voyage provides the reader with a penetrating portrait of their lives and their marginal existence.
