As a painter but also as a diplomat to negotiate about a truce or - rather - peace conditions. For his beloved city of Antwerp was being destroyed by the ongoing war: trade was suffering badly and many well-to do and rich citizens were leaving to make their living elsewhere. Antwerp impoverished and depopulated.
