The Upstairs Room
Year of publication:
Two Jewish girls are hiding from the Nazis on a farm in Usselo (near Enschede).
Eight-year-old Annie describes her life boxed up in a small room: full of anxiety, insecurity and physical discomforts caused by their forced inactivity.
Not knowing whether this will ever end destroys their spirits. Her teenage sister is affected even more by the fact that they live their lives in complete isolation.
Johan, Dientje and granny´s cordiality sustain Annie through the years.
