The Dutch East-Indiaman ‘Batavia’ is wrecked off the coast of Australia, the survivors try to get by on a couple of islets. One of them starts a bloody regime and, with a couple of followers, rules his kingdom like a true dictator. He does not even shrink from murder.
He is believed to have been influenced by the Mennonites, Rosicrusians, and Freemasons such as the painter Torrentius.
The book is also full of information about the rise of Amsterdam as a rich mercantile centre, and about the ways and wealth of the Dutch East India Company.
Based on the same historical tragedy as 'The Company: the Story of a Murderer' by Arabella Edge.
