In 1922, the 12-year-old Irish gamin John Condon enrolls in the army, trying to escape poverty and dreariness. When war breaks out, his regiment gets sent to the Belgian front. Once there, he discovers that war is not an exciting adventure, but a grim reality. He does not have to suffer for long: he is killed in battle at age 14 near Ieper, where his grave can still be found.
