Johan Brouwer is from a poor family. He learns the craft of making sails and signs up on ‘the Johanna Maria’, under captain Wilders. He sails the seven seas, dreaming of the day he may call the vessel his own.
The captain dreams of his wife and children at home. When he leaves, Brouwer spends many more years under many other captains on his beloved ‘Johanna Maria’.
