The Man who Mapped the Planet
Year of publication:
Gerard de Kremer (1512-1594) dedicated his life to practicing science and creating maps. He was forced into political activity, especially after he was imprisoned on the charge of heresy. He preferred to stay aloof from politics and moved to Duisburg. That was in fact the only journey he ever made; he gathered the information for his maps from travelers and other map makers. He developed a method which allowed the round earth to be portrayed on a flat map.
Illustrated with reproductions of paintings, maps, and globes.
