At age twelve, Grietje Reyniers is left to take care of herself. She gets a job as a maid in Amsterdam. She loses her job when an accident causes a fire. She is left with no other option than to earn some money as a prostitute.
In order to get away from poverty and persecution, she travels to New Amsterdam. She also hopes to recover her lost love there, who has traveled ahead of her.
In this new colony, she starts a trade in whatever she comes across. Her business practices often give rise to disputes, which makes her a regular visitor at the court of justice.
