The Count of Talavera
Year of publication:
Ferdinand Huyck comes home from a long stay abroad. Just before he reaches his house he meets baron Van Lintz (a.k.a. the Knight of the Golden Fleece) who is wanted by the police. Justly or unjusty? – Ferdinand does not know. Nevertheless, he tries to help the sympathetic knight which gets him into trouble. A very awkward position to be in, especially since he is the obedient, loving son of the schout [mayor / chief of police] of Amsterdam.
At the same time Ferdinand meets the beautiful Henriëtte Blaek and falls in love with her. Unfortunately, her uncle and guardian thinks she should marry his own son.
