The Seventh Square
Year of publication:
Prins Maurice (1567-1625) becomes Stadtholder, head of state, at 17 years of age after his father gets murdered. He is busy waging numerous battles against the Spaniards, who have not been defeated by far.
His adulterous affair with Margaretha van Mechelen lasted up to his death, because all his attempts at securing a marriage with a foreign noble woman failed for political reasons and because of his lack of status: a Stadtholdership carries no inhereted right to the title for his descendants.
