Year of publication:
De scheepsjongens van Bontekoe
East-Indiaman ‘Nieuw-Hoorn’ perishes in a fire at sea. A part of her crew manage to save themselves in a lifeboat. When hunger and thirst almost force them to give up, they sight land. While gathering supplies, they are taken by surprise by a band of hostile natives. The cabin boys Hajo, Rolf en Padde and galley boy Harmen get seperated from the rest and are left behind on Sumatra. They try to make their way through the wilderness by foot looking for European settlers who may help them get home.
Illustrated by Dick de Wilde.
Inspired by the Bontekoe Journal, first printed in Dutch in 1646. Translated into modern Dutch by Thomas Rosenboom in 2007, with an introduction and glossary.
